God's Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 02/14/18 at 11:02 AM CT

Alas, my pleas to the ratings board last week hath feel on deaf ears. Once again I am left with little to naught to talk about as there is but a single wide release in this week's update and, gag me, it's the next entry in the God's Not Dead franchise. I make no qualms about my disdain for faith-based films, especially those that take a not-so-subtle approach to their "message". Yet it is the only film worth mentioning, so mention it I must - grudgingly.

So the next film in the series will be God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness, which follows Pastor (and/or Reverand) Dave (David A.R. White) who faces his biggest challenge when his church, located on Hadleigh University, is burned down. Of course the faithless university board uses this violence to try to force the church off campus, because religion is terrible for business. But it gives Dave a chance to reunite with his estranged brother, facing the past that drove them apart - and finding a light amidst this darkness. There is a built-in audience for faith-based films, and seeing as the first film brought in over $60 million and the sequel nearly $21 million, this third entry will likely find enough success the Pure Flix will most likely also figure out a way to make a fourth one. Preachy films don't score high in my book and nothing has made me want to see their first two films and I'm not about to start now. Co- stars John Corbett, Jennifer Taylor, Tatum O'Neal, Ted McGinley and Shane Harper. Rated PG for thematic elements including some violence and suggestive material.

That's your one and only new film worth mentioning, but if you're inclined, check out the full MPAA Ratings Bulletin below:
