High-Rise and More in This Week's MPAA Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 04/13/16 at 11:42 AM CT

Sometimes you ask and receive and sometimes your pleas fall on deaf ears. If last week was a stretch at finding something interesting to find in the update, this week is even worse. Unless you're a fan of ultra right-wing propaganda, I could only find a single limited release film that could be considered anything approaching a major film. So that's all you're going to get - one entry and, once again, I can only hope that next week brings us back to some semblance of exciting ratings releases.

The one, lone entry that looks like it will hold some interest is the British period drama High-Rise. Adapted from the novel by J.G. Ballard, Ballard was setting his novel in the future, while to us High-Rise is set in the past giving the whole thing an alternate history/sci-fi tinge. The cast looks fantastic: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss and James Purefoy all join the decadent fun. The film will be available for steaming before its limited debut in May, but given the cast, I have to think it has a good chance of attracting an audience. Given the setting, it's obvious the film was built for the UK and Europe in mind, but I don't see why the U.S. won't get just as much pleasure out of it. Rated R for violence, disturbing images, strong sexual content/graphic nudity, language and some drug use.

Even though it looks like a hilarious joke (in my eyes), I refuse to give AmeriGeddon a write-up as I don't want to give this right-wing "wake-up call" any kind of attention. The fact that it even exists kind of turns my stomach. Anyway, that's what you get for this week - hopefully next week will bring us better results.
