New DVD Releases to Crave This Week: Have Your Back-Up Plan to Surviving the Dead at The Square

You know what I have on my mind this week.... LOST - but since that's not a movie, I guess I'll have to make due with what else is coming out. There's another good movie about an island... only this one is populated by zombies.

1) While George A. Romero may have already has his glory days, there's no way I'm passing up Survival of the Dead. This is kind of an undead Hatfield and McCoy feud with two families with highly different outlooks on how to treat the recently deceased-turned-risen dead. Anything involving Romero and zombies is an instant buy in my book.

2) I realize that not everyone is as crazy about zombies as I am, so therefore relax with a bit of romantic comedy fluff. That would be The Back-Up Plan. I guess if you want to see attractive people run around and display moderate chemistry, you will have a winner.

3) Go down the line a little and pick up a nice Australian Thriller - The Square. Affairs, crime, revenge - if you want your quota filled, this is a good place to start. Sometimes the best films are ones that happen to be a little under the radar, and I think that will be the case here.

4) Proving that dysfunctional families will never go out of style is the stylish City Island. Andy Garcia is the patriarch of a family chock full of secrets. I don't know how it can compete against the ultimate dysfunctional family (that would be The Tenenbaums) but considering all the love it has got from critics, it should be a welcome additional to the tree.

On the Blu-Ray front is one of the more off-the-wall Terry Gilliam films Time Bandits. Fans of the Monty Python brand of humor will certainly appreciate the effort. Fans of the bloody samurai action will be more than happy to know that Shogun Assassin is also being released in a 30th Anniversary special edition. It's true what they say (and by they, I mean myself) "You can never have too much blood."
