New Movies to Crave: The Other Guys Step Up to Middle Men

It seems Hollywood refused to let the buddy cop movie die in peace. Despite being a desperate grab-bag of cliches and over-the-top characters, the only movie that stands a chance of earning some dough is:

1) The Other Guys - With Will Ferrell playing the desk jockey and Mark Wahlberg the always-angry partner, it's sure to be filled with plenty of halfway funny jokes and situations. But, hey, there's Eva Mendes too! It has a pretty good supporting cast: Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson (the last two being the much-loved "tough" cops) so it might not be all bad. Still, even after three weeks, I give the edge to Inception once again.

2) Don't discount the urban audience appetite for movies about dancing. Step Up 3D is also coming out. I haven't watched the first two, so no, I won't be watching this one either. I honestly can't understand the appeal - plus it appears this third entry loses whatever heart the first two had - lots of dancing, but no emotion. Still, I bet it will do better than I would expect.

3) Middle Men tells the story of a true pioneer to the Internet age: Jack Harris, as he finds out that sex really does sell, especially online. From the description, it kind of sounds like Boogie Nights for the web - sex, drugs, criminals and the cast looks pretty good with Luke Wilson playing Harris, with support from Giovanni Ribisi, James Caan, Kevin Pollack, Kelsey Grammer amongst others. It will probably be under the radar, but looks might interesting.

4) Finally, just because is stars Gemma Arterton, I will mention The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Small cast, small space, twisty story about a kidnap victim who may not be a victim at all - sounds intriguing, if the actors can pull it off. Sounds tempting, but I'm not sold - but it would make a good rental in the future.
