Absurd and utterly pointless, "The Rock" has a lot of testosterone, but too little intelligence to hold my interest.

There is a reason why Michael Bay became such a big shot director back in the 90s. Not because of Armageddon but because of his earlier film, The Rock. Hands down his best film as a director and one of the best pure action films of the 1990s. It's up there with Speed and the Fugitive. Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris are all excellent as the badass hero, the nerdy hero, and the surprisingly sympathetic villain.

A good movie with two actors in their prime. This is a must see. If you have ever been to Alcatraz, this is an even cooler watch.

Brigadier General Francis X Hummel (Harris) seize control of Alcatraz Island. Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Cage) is being recruited FBI Director Womack (John Spencer) is forced to turn to Federal prisoner John Mason (Connery) has illegally detained for decades the only inmate of Alcatraz to ever successfully escaped through Alcatraz. Special Agent Ernest Paxton (William Forsythe) manages to escape to see his estranged daughter (Claire Forlani). I felt the overloaded characters, light plot and a bombardment of explosions kept this film from being really good. Screenplay and soundtrack was okay but the pace of the story was just dull for an action flick.

Remember when Michael Bay made action movies that had more to them than flashy special effects? This one gets high marks for having exciting action and just being plain fun.

This may be one of Michael Bay's better movies. Yes, it's over the top and full of explosive action sequences, but it's actually written and directed in a pretty coherent way that entertains, rather than annoys. Bay did himself a favor by casting larger than life actors in the leads, adding to the fun quality of the film.

This was a pretty cool movie. And, they could've made it really cheesy, but they didn't. Good for them!
