Oliver Stone isn't afraid to make his opinion known, and it often hurts rather than helps his films. But Platoon avoids that and shows the harsh reality of wars: moral choices, madness, courage and lack thereof - right up there with Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now as a quintessential Vietnam War film.

One of the best films centered on the Vietnam war. The characters are what stand head and shoulders above the rest.

A very important film both in terms of the portrayal of young American soldiers in the Vietnam War and a country's begrudging acceptance of its part in the conflict. Platoon is an extremely realistic movie and pulls no punches in its depiction of jungle warfare. The viewers are plunged headfirst into the chaos and destruction and like its main protagonist (as played by Charlie Sheen); you are forced to make decisions. Based on Oliver Stones own combat experience, Platoon lacks much of the directors sermonizing he utilises in later films and instead focuses on the inhuman and horrific events encountered by men on the edge of madness. Intense, visceral and compelling, Platoon remains one of the best combat movies ever.

A great war drama. A favorite in my family. Great performances by Dafoe and Sheen.

It's probably the best Vietnam movie ever. And, it is, by far and away, the best thing Oliver Stone has ever done.

An effective film at what Oliver Stone's vision of the Vietnam war. This film is a lot less one sided than most of his other films and a whole lot more effective with is very interesting a well done morality tale. Stone does not over do things like he usually does, and that is what makes it actually good.

Up there with Saving Private Ryan as the best war film ever made. Sheen, Dafoe, And Berenger are great as is the rest of the cast. A must see.

Not as good as "Born on the 4th of July," and not nearly as good as "Apocalypse Now" it still does a pretty good job of showing what Vietnam may have been like.
