Unfunny, Tedious, And Disappointing

JLFM - wrote on 04/12/2012

A disappointing third film in the Pirates series. It suffers from all the problems of the first and second, and then some. Much of the appeal of the first two are gone, and what remains is a confusing, boring, and unfunny second sequel.

Problems abound from everywhere, so I'll be working hard to narrow it down.

For one, Johnny Depp's role as Jack Sparrow is once again shrunken into a smaller part.

Also there is absolutely no action that is even vaguely interesting (after the first half hour). In fact, the last hour is at least 45 minutes action, and it's surprisingly dull. In fact, it's tedious. It's just people killing each other, and nothing interesting about it. There's no variety, no interesting atmosphere. Just swords clashing.

There is a plot, which is more than …

"POTC: At World's End" by Yojimbo

The third instalment of the saga of Captain Jack Sparrow sees him rescued from Davy Jones' Locker to help defeat Clark and The Flying Dutchman. World's End makes a lot of mistakes the previous film made; it concentrates far too much on spectacle and special effects rather than characterisation, the film again resembling a very elaborate cartoon in places. The amusing eccentricities brought to Jack's character by Johnny felt a lot more forced and there are too many characters vying for screen time. This results in Chow Yun Fat being completely wasted and Norrington's character development, which was the best thing about Dead Man's Chest, is completely ignored. But one mistake it does not make is in the pacing; although it is rather longer, it never drags or bores. There's a lot of fun to …

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End review

Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) meet Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat), pirate lord of Singapore. Will (Orlando Bloom) gets free because the men of Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) infiltrate Feng’s lair. Will explains to Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) that Cutler Beckett has the heart of Davy Jones. Davy Jones captures Calypso and the 9 pirate captains try to rescue her. Captain Swann’s speech was a bit coy and Jack’s hallucination a bit overdone to show Depp’s acting dexterity. Unfortunately, Chow Yun-Fat’s role was small. The pace, action and direction was better than the last installment though the humor was not that enticing. Screenplay was likewise a huge improvement with quotes from Jack – “The world's still the same. There's …

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a gigantic disappointment to one of the best franchise's in film history. This movie is not even in the same league as the first two films. With such a huge budget that this film had, you would think they would give you something worth cheering for, that's not the case here. The story is lame and so is the script. The direction is good along with the acting(as always). Johnny Depp's jack sparrow character is actually a supporting character this time around and his performance here is good. I loved Geoffrey Rush's terrific performance as Captain Barbossa, his character is basicly the lead role in this film. Keira Knightley steals the film, giving a wonderful performance and is actually given something to do this time around. Naomie Harris is …

Avoid It - There's Better Ways to Spend 3 Hours

Arek - wrote on 03/08/2009

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is an embarrassing finale to an otherwise entertaining and original trilogy. The story is confusing and directionless - it seemed to me that random elements of the first two movies were spliced together to create a third installment. The action sequences, while impressive, are mired by a set so dark and shadowy it renders the movie almost unwatchable off the big screen. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who breathed charisma into the previous two movies, has been reduced to mundane conversations with himself and other half-hallucinatory episodes which bring nothing to the story. Several plot twists (i.e. Calypso) add absolutely nothing to the story other than to enhance the already bloated run time of almost 3 hours.

Sadly, I found this to be …

Pretty good, but somewhat lags at times

"Lord Cutler Beckett" (Tom Hollander), who has declared war on piracy to the point that he will order the hanging of a child who is remotely associated with pirates, is in the possession of "Davy Jones'" (Bill Nighy) heart. Since he has the heart, "Jones" has no choice but to do his bidding, and goes after every pirate ship to destroy it.

However, the great pirate, "Captain Jack Sparrow" (Johnny Depp) is trapped in Davy Jones' Locker, and has to be released by the crew of his ship, which are being led by "Will Turner" (Orlando Bloom) and his love, "Elizabeth Swann" (Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley).

Let me say first that some of the scenes are hard to see on television. This is due to the shadowing and dark colors used in these scenes. I noticed that I was paying more …

No substance, Less jokes

BryanFury - wrote on 11/17/2007

I had so many expectations from this third and hopefully not the last installment of the series, but i guess in the end all you can think about is the beginning. There were really so many plots to think about, you could not even put a finger on one. Okay the effects were great whoopee, but what about the story. Even Jack Sparrow character seemed different. You somewhat get the sense that so much of the original formula was changed. If the second installment has laugh meter score of 10, this one would have 5. I guess that's why it did not work for me. It had less jokes and more worthless air time, or in other words at least more than half of its substance is crap. That is why to me in the end all I can I think about is the beginning, the first and second movie that is...
