"The Mothman Prophecies" by Yojimbo

Allegedly based on a true story, The Mothman Prophecies is the story of a journalist who finds himself in a small town where the inhabitants keep seeing a mysterious winged figure who tells them of catastrophes yet to occur. Well, for a start. "True story"...? Please. This is a mystery based very much on the formula of The X-Files, with a journalist and lady cop sidekick filling the shoes of everybody's favourite FBI agents while they investigate the mysterious happenings that seem to point to some alien force predicting the future. The approach is quite like that of The Omen and similar religious thrillers, Pellington unable to resist the urge to throw in plenty of spooky imagery and elaborate wipes to underline just how "doo-de-doo-doo, doo-de-doo-doo" Twilight Zone it all is. Richard Gere plays John Klein, a Washington, D.C.reporter who he and his wife Debra Messing) are involved in a car accident. Shortly after her death, John discovers strange drawings that she had made of a winged creature.
Two years later, while driving to Richmond, Virginia, John becomes lost and ends up arriving in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia with no memory of how he got there. He soon becomes entangled in a chain of mysterious events, whereby local townspeople report strange supernatural encounters, along with weird lights and phone calls. John investigate the encounters and finds out that a supernatural creature known as the Mothman, whose appearances seem to foretell disastrous events is the common link. Slow But Eerie

This film was supposedly based on a true story but there were many things about it that were so unbelievable, it was borderline science fiction. Still, I managed to focus on the film’s skill to entertain and effectiveness to thrill rather than its validity. The story kind of reminded me of a stand alone episode of “The X-Files” to the point where I expected Mulder and Scully to eventually appear on screen to help Richard Gere and Laura Linney solve the mystery. There were many questions that were raised, particularly during the first half, but almost none of them were ever answered clearly. It’s as if the filmmakers decided to put together one creepy scene after another without adding up to anything concrete. So, I would definitely say that there’s no reason for this picture to …
