Sort of a reverse "Stand by Me," a film that puts its cast of teen and child actors through questions of moral intensity with openness and honesty. The film is marvelously acted with a sort of somber urgency that touches on its themes without getting preachy. It's a heartbreaking coming of age story that sticks with you long after it's over.

It is rare to see a coming of age drama that is as perceptive, astute and as realistic as Mean Creek. A routine story is handled with a moral complexity missing in most teen movies and the acting has a brutally honest edge, Mean Creek is a taut, suspenseful little thriller with honest dialogue and a young cast that is convincing and assured. This is a surprisingly good movie that is confrontational and incredibly earnest and handles the sometimes-painful transition from child to adulthood with a sincerness, which can only be admired and feared.

There's a strong, realistic morality play between the bully and his victims. The story pulls back the curtain on each character's motives, showing that everyone is the victim and the bully, depending on the situation . It all comes to a boiling head at the beginning of act three, when an unforeseen tragic incident occurs. Terrific performances make the heavy subject matter hit hard. A great film that all teenagers could learn from.
