Dated and just not that funny, Robert Altman's film adaptation of the satirical novel doesn't have half the cultural impact that the TV series that followed it did.

"Attention. Tonight's movie has been "MASH". Follow the zany antics of our combat surgeons as they cut and stitch their way along the front lines. Operating as bombs... Operating as bombs and bullets burst around them, snatching laughs and love between amputations and penicillin." Cheers, mate. 97/100

I've never been a fan of the television show (although this is nothing like it), and I've never read the book. I'm also not a huge Robert Altman fan, so I had no idea what to expect going into this. It's not bad, Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland are great as they almost always are and it has a few laughs, but just not quite my cup of tea.

This is Altman's least rambling effort - a remarkably focused film that features a lethal blend of dark humor and sentimental musings on war and peace. The film is definitely darker and more melancholy than the popular TV series that it spawned.

The movie is just as good as the TV show..., unfortunately.

Huge fan of the TV show and I love the movie as well. Perfect example of a good black comedy.

Black comedy about the doctors in war. I found it much more entertaining than the television show that came after.

The first time I tried to watch this Altman movie, I couldn't. However, the second time, I was much more successful and liked it, especially the football scene (even though I'm not crazy about sports). I like Elliott Gould too. This was supposedly the first movie with the "F" word, but I was so caught up with the "GD"s (I don't know there may have been anywhere from 3-10), that I didn't notice if and when they said the "F" word.

I think that in order to truly understand this film is to live in the time that it was created. The year was 1972 and the Vietnam War was coming to a close with a lot of political tension in the country. Not a big difference from today. Think of the controversy of Sicko today(don't like the premise of that film) and take that back to the 70's. It was controversial to say the least. Hell disco wasn't even around yet and penetration in Penthouse was 3 decades away. Come on Alex, it was ahead of it's time. BTW M.A.S.H stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital

I was never really big on the TV show, though I've probably seen most of the episodes at one point or another. I do like the film, though. It's definitely not a typical war film.
