There's an appealing sophistication and no shortage of smashing performances in Stanley Kubrick's overlong "Lolita," which help to prop it up amongst its director's superior classics.

Great story, very smart humor. It could be 4 stars but it is a bit old and makers were restricted

The changes Kubrick made, for the censorships at the time, have the story unable to reach the level of the novel, but the subtle nature of the character's relationship works well and there is an underlying black humor throughout the first half of the film. The second half is overlong and the conclusion loses some emotion because the finale was shown at the beginning. Though, I was so intrigued by the first half that I didn't mind the problems of the second so much.

There are some good scenes in here - Lolita's first introduction, Mason's paranoid breakdown at the hospital, and any scene with the great Peter Sellers. I find the film to be long-winded and overly dramatic at times (lots of stage-like yelling and emoting that could have landed better if it had more highs and lows), but it's a tantalizing handling of a very controversial novel. I wouldn't count this as Kubrick's best, but it's probably the best anyone could have done with the written material.

This film is much better than one would think, however nothing about it has the same passion of Nabokov's novel. Peter Sellers is excellent as Quilty, and Sue Lyon is pretty as a picture, but the rest of the cast was subpar. Shelley Winters took the desperate role as the Haze Woman a bit too far. Though, it was remarkably outdone by the 1997 version by Adrian Lyne, Kubrick could have done more with it in his "Clockwork Orange" days.

Although not my favorite Kubrick, he still works magic on a highly controversial subject matter. I have to wonder what Kubrick would have done if he made this later, rather than earlier, in his career.

I was surprised at how this fantastic this movie was. I had been dreading it, because of the subject matter, but I felt it was greatly stylized (usually I don't care about that). But Kubrick did everything well. This may be my favorite Kubrick movie. This or The Killing. Yay!

A very long winded film that I had to watch over a stretch of two days. Despite this, it feels like a Kubrick film, but it also feels like Citizen Kane and Sunset Blvd (though not near as good). It's not perfect, but it's still good.
