Flawed Hero Makes for an Ironclad Film

Chris Kavan - wrote on 05/10/2008

More often than not, superheroes are portrayed as too nice or too unbelievable to connect with. Superman has the power, but he’s always such a boy scout and let’s not even get into Spiderman’s recent emo turn. Yet sometimes with the right actor, right director and rights script you get a hero who is also human. I thought Batman was the only man who could show real emotion, but now I’ve found another worthy successor.

With Robert Downey, Jr. behind the mask and Jon Favreau behind the camera, Iron Man becomes one of those rare superhero movies that packs so much more punch because the hero is flawed. Tony Stark is not a hero. He makes weapons of war, is a blatant womanizer, a glib talker and quick drinker. Lucky for the world, his eyes are opened after nearly being destroyed …

Watching "Iron Man" made me feel really old. I found myself halfway through acknowledging the fact that I should have been enjoying it more than I was.

However, after the fact, I still rated it nearly perfect. Technically, it's one of the best superhero movies that has been made, but while I can't say it doesn't have heart, it just did not affect me emotionally.

What I liked most about "Iron Man" was that while it did not stray from the standard superhero origin formula, it DID stray from the standard superVILLAIN formula. In fact, at the point I thought things were winding down, I wondered if there was even going to BE a villain.

Which leads me to the other thing I liked about "Iron Man". With the exception of M. Night Shyamalan's "Unbreakable", "Iron Man" is perhaps the …

Iron Man Is Golden

This was the most fun I have had at the movies so far this year! Marvel has another hit on their hands!! They've turned another comic legend into a gem on the big screen. Casting Robert Downey Jr. in the starring role was risky business, but a major payoff now.

So, once 2008 came into play I began to worry about Marvel. They have now become their own production company which is a great thing, but they also had to borrow over $500 million to start up Iron Man and the rebirth of The incredible Hulk on their own. So, Iron Man really needed to be a hit, and well they hit a grand slam here! Casting Downey Jr. was risky as I said before. This was his first film coming out of rehab, but he was amazing here. Now i can't picture anyone else playing the role. He brings a passion to the …

This one will probably stand at the plateau comic books movies try to reach. Robert Downey Jr. once again plays himself but he brings the charm and the funny you couldn't imagine anyone more suited for this role, to say that he nails it would be an injustice, he is Iron Man. The only doubt I had going in is the ability of Jon Favreau to direct a movie on this scale, and craft a solid action sequence. Alas I was proven wrong, you just have to be impressed with all this coming from a guy who never did this kind of movie before. His level of understanding of what makes action work and what doesn't is that of a veteran in the field. No small part of the success was the incredible and groundbreaking CGI, there wasn't an instant when I felt that I wasn't watching something real. With its …

You know you're starting in the right foot when you kick things off in the tune of AC/DC. That is one of just a few handful scene stealing highlights that would really make you think this movie is cool. Well to me there are but a few "it" moments like the one I've mentioned earlier when everything literally starts off with a bang. I'm not a big fan of the comic books but I have to say I’m impressed with Downey's portrayal of this 40'ish brilliant but womanizing bachelor with absolutely everything on his hands except for a superpower. Although the premise of a billionaire turned electromagnetic based superhero is not your usual CG web slinger or even a green buff monster, Iron man does hold its own identity with uniqueness and strength of character. Another highlight for me was the fact …

Superhero movies have never been more grounded in real life than here. The film’s entire set-up, a weapons manufacturer captured by terrorists in the Middle East to build their weapons, seems like a situation that could easily be seen on the news. Combined with the military presence and the ever-popular “how corrupt are major businesses?” scenario and you’ve got one realistic comic book movie.

It’s unusual that a big-budget summer action film these days would star Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, but each prove more than able in their roles. While Pepper doesn’t do much more than the standard superhero love interest, Paltrow successfully sheds the alienating snootiness that’s affected her in the past. And as Stark, Downey may have found his signature role. Tony …

Review - Iron Man (2008)

I'm going to cut the formalities and jump right into this one. In the first fifteen minutes or so, we are introduced to Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. He's a hard-working slacker who's in control of his late father's arsenal company. He the kind of guy who spends most of his time with women in bars and casinos. Basically, they make you instantly either love or hate him. Unfortunately for the filmmakers, I chose the latter.

Soon enough he's captured by terrorists who want him to make them weapons, but at this point I really don't care what happens to this guy. This is, however, how we lead into the real attraction of the film, which is the titular Iron Man. I figure they realized the fans would be sick of the slow pace thus far, so the story speeds ahead while Stark builds his …

Summer is here with an amazing blockbuster film!!

Absolutely Sick! This film is by far one of the best Marvel films released in the last few years. The acting was perfect, the effects were amazing, and the story line stuck with the comic book in a great way. I really think that Jon Favreau made the best decision in putting Robert Downey Jr in the role of Tony Stark. He pulls off the character very well, his charisma really shines in this movie.
The effects were done in a very tasteful way, they were enough to keep the film always running smooth and they added to a great story, which I really appreciated because far too many times have I seen a movie that I thought would be great but felt ripped off because the effects were the showcase and the script was weak.
The story really works because they focus on the character and give you …
