One of the best horror/thrillers of the 80s. Good for rewatch.

C. Thomas Howell is stalked on a dusty american highway by a psychotic hitchhiker in this cult chiller. The formula has been used a million times, but never as effectively; the lack of explanation for it all somehow adds to the tension, and the director uses admirable restraint leaving much of the gory violence to the imagination. Howell's acting abilities are rather limited, but the film belongs to Rutger Hauer who brings his trademark brand of creepy intensity to the role of the enigmatic maniac. It also has more visual panache than most of it's contemporaries, and has aged considerably better as a result.

Good chase thriller, with a cool performance from Rutger Hauer as the 'Hitcher'.

This is a great film! I loved the hitcher character, was brilliantly calm and terrifying at the same time.

This is one of two actually good hitchiker films. Don't watch the remake, cause... Well Michael Bay had something to do with it so you know how that turned out... This is a great film though. A classic and made people really think to never pick up a stranger.

It moves a little too slow for my taste, but the Hitcher has some tense scenes and Rutger Hauer is damn scary as a smart, sneaky serial killer. It builds and builds and the end is kind of letdown for me - even if it is dark.
