Most crime capers that I've seen have an engrossing story and interesting characters. Sadly, this one doesn't.

Based off a Donald Westlake novel, this plodding crime drama ostensibly about different grifters playing the next big con. In reality, it's much more of a sordid family drama about a mother (Huston) and her dysfunctional relationship with her grown son (Cusack)..The crime element is more of a side-plot. Hooray. Oh and there's some creepy incestuous subtext thrown in too. Goody. It's undeniably well made and the acting is pretty good. Angelica Huston especially as this broken, desperate, conniving woman.

This is a well-acted and slickly-directed crime thriller that also plays with the emotions, as it involves nuanced characters with real loyalties and obsessions.

The dark side. Implied incest, crooks, con artists, fear, greed, violence, losers. The book by Jim Thompson is even grimmer, but this will do to mess with our minds. Well acted, raw material.
