"Gladiator" is a flat and exhausting sword-and-sandal epic that sadly isn't one of Ridley Scott's finest.

Ridley Scott crafts a triumphant recreation of ancient Rome - capturing the bloodthirsty spirit of the time, as well as the decadent political climate. The film boasts impressive set design and effects - creating the awe-inspiring carnage of the gladiatorial battles in vivid detail. Russell Crowe makes for an inspiring hero, but Joaquin Phoenix steals many scenes as the slimy and treacherous villain. A truly impressive achievement.

This one shows that action, hack and slash, can be combined with a good story.

This is a very well made film. Gorgeously shot and beautifully executed. The battle scenes are easily the best part of the whole movie. The story is good, but doesn't come off as the 'epic' that it's made out to be. The movie tries too hard to please multiple crowds and suffers partially from that. It's mostly enjoyable for the reason of spectacle. But, to answer Maximus's question, I was in fact entertained.

This film is a great example of why 'movie making' is an art. Visuals are beautiful, and the story line is captivating. No one can play Russell Crowe's part better!

This is filmmaking on a grand level. It lacks the heart of Spartacus, but still is a rousing spectacle with a heroic story arc.

Bash this film all you want. This is one of the best movies I have EVER seen. The fight scenes are phenomenal, visually its stunning, the performances are incredible, and the length of the movie doesn't bring it down. In my mind, this is Ridley Scott's best work.

It's not any where near as good as what people say it is. But, it's still a pretty good movie. The worst scene (and, for me, the most memorable) is when Russell Crowe sees his dead wife and child and starts to cry. Because, all of a sudden, shit starts dripping out of his nose! lol. How disgusting!
