Seems we get two biopics about professional jazz trumpeters in the same year. I may prefer this one slightly over 'Miles Ahead' for it's much more raw and downbeat sentiments. Hawke disappears in a masterfully empathetic portrayal of Chet Baker. The film covers a period of his life when he was at his worst and had to overcome physical, and drug, problems to reclaim his musicianship status. He finds a new means within himself to alter his performing abilities, leading to a satisfying conclusion. A fascinating character study upheld by a great performance.
