"Sing Street" by Yojimbo

A Dublin teenager is moved from private school to a rough Catholic comprehensive where he forms a band to impress a local girl. To call Sing Street "This Is England meets The Commitments" would be a lazy comparison, but not entirely inaccurate. It's a nostalgic trip back in time to the 1980's, when music was about rebellion, belonging and passion rather than the bland, corporate conveyor belt of TV talent show-spawned mediocrity it seems to have become. Being in the company of the likeable young cast is a fun way to spend a couple of hours, the scenes involving its star Ferdia-Walsh Peelo and his stoner older brother Jack Reynor resonating in particular, and John Carney's musical homages to the naive power pop of the period work find a perfect balance of cheesiness and catchiness. John Carney schliesst an die Tradition irischer Musikfilme an und taucht ein in das Dublin der 80er, in die Zeit seiner Jugend. Die Eltern streiten sich im Wohnzimmer, während der 15jährige Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) auf dem Bett liegt und das Gebrüll der Erziehungsberechtigten in Songtexte umwandelt. Nostalgic Teen Musical

'Sing Street' is a work of pure emotion and raw talent. John Carney's followup to his incredible 'Once' and joyful 'Begin Again', sees the return of all his musical storytelling strengths. This time we follow the exploits of a teen wrestling with the usual angsty self-discovery as the result of woes in the home life, school, and romance. One may look at the plot and find it a commonality in the usual teen movie offerings - and they'd be right. However, despite often bordering on the edge of fluff, the film has a grounded setting and wonderful characters to reign it in. Carney brings his song writing insight to a high school level with the same passion as in films previous. I love how he shows us those relatable moments in life that inspire the characters to write their songs. It …

From "Bind" to "Band"

In Sing Street, set in the 1980s, our main protagonist grade school student Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is in a bind. His unstable parents transfer him to a private school in which he is even in more of a obstacle than ever before in his life (bullies, principal hates him, etc.). He sees a beautiful girl out in the distance, giving him incentive to form a new band. And now we have our movie, which turned out to be really, really incredible.
How did I come to that conclusion? Let's find out! For starters, all (and I mean all) of these young actors nailed their roles as characters that were literally brought to life on screen. Amazing character development is one of the many places where this movie shines. You begin to feel for every character's situation and everything each character …
