"Room" by Yojimbo

A young woman who has been held prisoner by a sexual predator for the last seven years spends all of her time locked in a single room with her 5 year old son. Room is has highly unusual approach to the subject matter of kidnap and its victims; instead of concentrating on the criminal aspect, it looks to the victims and how they must adapt and adjust to their circumstances. The story is told from the perspective of the young boy and his mother, who is - quite literally - his entire world. In fact for the first half of the film, their lives can be seen as the ultimate example of an abusive relationship; Joy endures her imprisonment and abuse for the sake of her child, never able to leave this impoverished and smothering existence. Something that many mothers can relate to, I'm sure. Rather …

The Power of Love

Room is divided into two distinct parts - the first takes place in a small 10x10 room where Ma (Brie Larson) cares for her son (Jacob Tremblay) while held captive by a man referred to as "Old Nick" (Sean Bridgers). The second takes place in the outside world - bigger and brighter, but also much more challenging as mother and son acclimate to this new situation, helped along by the woman's mother (Joan Allen) and her new husband (Tom McCamus).

That's the story in a nutshell, but at the heart of Room is the deep and unwavering love between a mother and son as well as the power in one's mind to deal with these extreme circumstances. The film wouldn't work without that bond, and in Larson and Tremblay, the film absolutely shines. Larson (deservedly) won a boatload of awards (including the …

Room - Movie Review

Ma: "You're gonna love it".

Jack: "What?".

Ma: "The world".

Room tells the story of a relationship between a mother and son, as she raises him while confined to a 10x10 room and what happens when they finally get out.

Since the 2016 Oscars are on Sunday and I've been lacking quite a bit on seeing as many Oscar contenders from last year. Room was one of those movies, as I've heard nothing but great things about it and how truly unique it is (from what I heard). It was a real shame that I had to wait for a while to get a chance to watch this movie, because it's been a very slow month over here in jolly good England. But after finally seeing the movie after that long wait, I can say that the movie was pretty underwhelming, and that's really disappointing saying that.

Brie …

Mother's Love Conquers All

'Room' is a tremendous moving story about the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. The premise involves a teenage girl being held captive in a single room for seven years and bearing a child from her captor during that time. Normally this would be the setup for a dark thriller, but here the focus is entirely on the loving nature between Ma and her five-year-old son, Jack. Ma creates an entire living, breathing world for him in this small room through sheer passion and imagination. She does everything possible to raise him in the most positive light; attempting to give him the closest thing to a happy childhood that one could manage under the circumstances. All of it is told from little Jack's perspective (complete with his narration). This is both heartbreaking and …
