A mindless video game in which anything can happen

My wife used to be an elementary school teacher. She enjoyed teaching writing most of all. She was frustrated, however, by boys who spent so much of their time playing video games that they could only write "stories" that went something like this: "The hero grabbed the laser gun and shot the three bad guys and blasted them to bits. And then he rolled behind a rock and threw a bomb and blew up some more bad guys. And then the head bad guy shot missiles at the hero but the hero pressed a button on his wrist and the missiles bounced off him and went back to the head bad guy and blew him up. And then the hero jumped into his ship and the last bad guys tried to blow up his ship but his ship disappeared and then appeared behind the bad guys and the hero blew them up." It must have been boys …

"Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2" by Yojimbo

Intergalactic freebooter Peter Quill and his alien shipmates are rescued from certain death by an immortal being claiming to be his father, but despite appearances Gamora continues to harbour suspicions as to his true intentions.

The sequel to Marvel’s computer generated space opera is very much more of the same; the combination of special effects-laden action sequences, cartoon aliens and juvenile humour set to a seventies soundtrack is virtually unchanged. Being one of the few who were left unmoved by the original film, I found this rather wearying – especially at a length of nearly two and a half hours. It does have its moments; unlike during the running time of first film, I actually did laugh a handful of times and I was starting to warm to the characters by the end of the …

The Second Round Feels as Fresh as the First

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a departure from the typical Marvel movie. It was a lot more fun, in my opinion, with much more unique characters (such as a talking raccoon and a living tree that could only say "I am Groot") and a truly kick-ass soundtrack. But now that I know (kind of) what to expect, could the second time around with these characters be just as good? I'm happy to say, it was pretty damn close and is totally worth catching up with the gang.

The film opens in the past where a digitally de-aged Kurt Russell is romancing Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) younger mother - while also planing a very alien plant. We skip to present day where the crew is battling an inter-dimensional beast for The Sovereign, a race of genetically-superior (and super golden) humanoids who grow …

Guardians 2 - Review

"I'm Mary Poppins y'all"

This is just insane and I love it.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is so far Marvel's funniest and touching movie to date. With it's humor being more dry, weird, and visually pleasing to the eyes. James Gunn takes key elements of the first movie that we love and expands on it. The opening credits is more grand and the Skittles-like color palettes is off the roof here. I think Gunn's directing/writing is much stronger here, as he can work freely without any studious interference.

Honestly, I don't understand the mix feedback this is getting. Not as good as the first, but it's still a good movie. At least this was more memorable and joyful than "Civil War".

"Vols. 2" goes more in depth with these characters and give them arcs which later get payoffs. …
