Pound for pound this film is not very good.

Southpaw tries for the grit and drama of a Raging Bull. The Rah! Rah! moments of a Rocky and the Emotional punch of Million Dollar Baby. But unfortunately Southpaw lacks any uniqueness to be considered with any of the great Boxing films. Jake Gyllenhall's "Good" performance is wasted on this tired, cliche ridden story. The writing is tepid and lazy at best. You'll notice anytime Forest Whitaker attempts to give one of those Inspirational speeches he can barely be understood. When you can hear what he's saying he's truly saying nothing but "blah, blah, blah". Most of his rambling monologues seem improvised,makes no sense and are barely recognizable at being from the English language. Jake Gyllenhaal must be given full credit for any business that this movie would do. He has again proved that an actor has the ability to divert attention of the audiences to only acting and make them forget all other elements of the movie they are watching.

Southpaw is an Actor’s movie there is nothing else in the movie. Jake has not only got the correct physique for this movie but has also outstandingly enacted the mannerisms of a boxer. He has played the role of a father with such a finesse that you cry for him, you pray for him to get his daughter back.

The story is old and we have seen it multiple times. The arrogant boxing players, losing everything and the getting it back again, we have watched it …

'Southpaw' is a hard-hitting boxing film. The story is exactly what you'd expect; a previous world title holder tries to regain his former glory. But that's the absolute minimalist explanation. This is a heavily dramatic piece. The film's main objective is to beat down the main characters (and the audience). The downfall of our champ is quite literally from the highest point to the absolute lowest. It comes as the result of a series of character flaws leading to bad decisions, which are originally set into motion by an unforeseen tragedy. A strong emotional core is established during this process. Investment through these struggles came easy for me. Convincing characters, superb acting, and the up close and personal direction aided greatly. Having those qualities makes the …
