A Most Violent Year- Carnivorous Couch Review

CarnivorousCouch - wrote on 02/23/2017

This is the kind of period piece I love. The kind where the detail is meticulously done, but where the period isn't where the movie begins and ends. Chandor (and mighty Bradford Young's camerawork) perfectly create grimy 1980s New York and then actually do something with it, telling a tale of challenged integrity that would make Sidney Lumet proud. Oscar Isaac continues to show that he may be the best actor of his generation when all is said and done. Only three films into his career, young J.C. Chandor is the quintessential wunderkind director. Of any director working today, he is perhaps the least easy …

Genau so ein Film stellt A most Violent Year dar.

A Most Violent Year

"A Most Violent Year" stars Oscar Isaac as the owner of the Standard Heating Oil home heating business. His wife and Chief Financial Officer is played by Jessica Chastain. Abel Morales (Isaac) after acquiring the company from Anna Morales’ (Chastain) father employs Andrew Walsh, played by Albert Brooks, as the company’s Lawyer. When rogue thugs violently hijack one of his trucks driven by Julian (Elyes Gabel), Abel is awakened to the possibility that other competing oil companies may be in cahoots. Abel’s suspicions are heightened when several more of his trucks are hijacked for the precious fuel and resold at other storage facilities. As if the hijackings weren’t enough of a distraction to his nascent enterprise, New York City District Attorney Lawrence (David Oyelowo) …

Good movie. Bad title. No wonder some hated it.

'A Most Violent Year' has gotten alot of praise and also alot of criticism over its style and storytelling. The title is misleading sure enough and as far as crime dramas go it's more drama than related to crime. The cinematography and recreation of 1980s New York looks fantastic. Oscar Isaac gives a strong performance as Abel Morales, an intelligent businessman whose heating oil company becomes backed into a corner because of mysterious truck hijackings against the backdrop of crime-ridden NYC. His wife Anna (Chastain) comes from a mob family and urges Abel to retaliate just as brutally to protect his business and more importantly his own family. Jessica Chastain is also great in her role. She behaves more like one of those shallow wives from a Bravo reality show at the drop of a hat …

“If I were you, I would start treating us with a little more respect or I guarantee he will make it his mission in life to ruin you.”

New York, 1981. The most violent year in the history of the metropolis New York. No doubt about it, but that violence probably took place somewhere else than where this film took place. Are you expecting some sort of mafia film like "Once upon a time in America", "The Godfather", "Scarface" or "The Untouchables" ? Well sorry, but this will be a disappointment for you because it's not such type of mafia movie. Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac) is the opposite of a Don Corleone. Anything that smells like mafia stuff or corruption, he tries to avoid studiously. He's trying to run his business in oil fair and square, without falling back on violent and corrupt …
