Why are DC cartoons better than the actual films?

The DC Animated Universe continues to succeed where many of the live action superhero movies produced by WB fail with this excellent time travel epic.
The Flash (Justin Chambers) ends up transported back in time by his enemy the Reverse Flash (a devious C. Thomas Howell) to a world where his deceased mother lives but the Justice League has split apart and the world is on the brink of Armageddon. Relying on a grizzled Batman in the Frank Miller mold (played by Kevin MicKidd) the Flash has to set things right.
The animation and the action scenes are outstanding. The movie succeeds at making friggin Aqua-Man a menacing and sometimes villainous character while the story's dark and bleak future is grim at times, the message of heroism trumping villainy isn't lost.
