This movie was a lot better than I thought it would be. I think this one came out after the Truman Show, because I remember thinking "oh geez not another 'reality' movie." However, I must say this one came at the 'reality tv' approach from a different angle. While the Truman Show played on how (and exaggerated) the way reality tv sets are so controlled that they may as well be scripted; and how they really screw with the reality star's life; EDtv focused more on the self-destruction of these people who put themselves in these situations thinking its going to catapult them into long-lasting fame. I really liked this movie, because when it came out reality tv was so much more fascinating than it is now (because now every channel has some type of reality show).

When I first saw this the previews for this movie my first reaction was that I would be walking around saying "Yeah I liked it better the first time when it was called the Truman Show." I was happy to see that this movie took a completely different direction. I was even more thrilled to see that they chose Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to play brothers (I always thought they looked a lot alike). So this movie did a good job of capitalizing on what was quickly becoming a trend on television, and that being reality TV. Film follows the formula all Ron Howard films have. Set up an interesting situation, show us a montage of how fun it is, throw in conflict, make it seem like the hero/heroine is in an impossibly difficult situation, have them get out of it and end with everybody …
