One of my personal favorites, based on the "Holy Innocents" by Gilbert Adair. Bertolucci is extravagant as always as he paints the most amazing portrait of France in the '60's in the time of Henri Langois and the riots that broke out as students and extremists fought for their right to art. Within are French twins, Theo and Isabelle (Garrell and Green), and an American studying abroad (Pitt); who happen to meet at a protest at the Cinematheque, and realize they are banded together by their obsession with film. Flashbacks of some of the most beautiful films of history are shown throughout, and the music is well picked with riffs from Jimi Hendrix, the beautiful wail of Janis Joplin, and the deep, dark twang of Bob Dylan. Adair wrote another version of his book after the film was completed,... |

Very good film |

I don't understand this idea that people think this film is pornographic...why? because it questions sexuality and it's what I call a "free" sort of film? If this is considered pornographic, then films here in the US like Unfaithful and Closer, (both excellent films) should be deemed pornographic as well. I saw nothing pornographic about this film. In fact, this was the film that I first saw her in, and made me a fan...not because of the nudity, thats just a pl... |

A Personal Favourite |
|
Most American audiences consider this film as pornographic and I cannot disagree more. It's art like no other. I don't want to get started on how Americans shy away from naked bodies and sexuality, yet the United States has one of the biggest pornographic industries in the world. If that isn't hypocrisy at its finest, I don't know what is. I guess violence is easier to swallow and digest than sexuality. Although the film has a plethora of depictions of carnality, it is more about the love/"love" between three people and the films that connect them. It also works as a statement regarding the loss of innocence through interactions between other human bodies and the way those interactions serve to protect the owners of such bodies from the political revolution that was happening at the time.... |
