When Hunters Become the Prey

I'm not sure I admire the term "mumblegore" to describe the recent crop of indie horror directors including director of You're Next Adam Wingard (as well as frequent collaborators Ti West, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen and Amy Seimetz amongst others - all who appear in the film). I've tried to give West a shot - but I really didn't like either House of the Devil or The Innkeepers. However, I did enjoy both V/H/S (and its sequels) as well as the ABCs of Death (another short horror film collection). I wasn't sure where You're Next would fall - but luckily it came out on the good side of horror experience.

Inventive Spin on Home Invasion

I had been hearing hype about 'You're Next' for almost two years and now I have seen it for myself. While I don't think every bit of the film is praise worthy, I do think that many parts of it are. Once you bear through the initial been-there-done-that set up, complete with a few lame actors, the movie kicks into high gear after the first kill. From then on it becomes a bloody opus of survivalism and heroism. At about halfway in, a cool twist is revealed and I wasn't all to sure how the plot was going to unfold. There's a handful of 'gotcha' moments and some really creative scenarios/kills. Some of these moments made me gasp, laugh, or raise my fist in an approving manner.
