Nolan’s Opus

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight has always been my favorite movie its respective genre since its release in 2008. It’s one of the only films of its ilk to feel like it could have been something else. Even Logan wore its mutant identity on its sleeve. In fact the first time I ever watched it I found myself telling someone it was my favorite film of the decade up to that point.

I am going to cliche route and start my review by praise Heath Ledger, may he Rest In Peace. What can I say about this performance? It’s one of those star turns that would have sent him into the stratosphere if he had lived. The mannerisms, the laugh, the entire persona. You couldn’t even tell it was him if you didn’t know to look for him. His performance is the only performance of its kind to win …

"THE" Superhero Movie

Robby Kronemeyer - wrote on 04/21/2015

This is not only one of the greatest comic book films ever. This is also one of MY favorite movies ever (largely because of Ledger). It is largely performance based which is uncommon for superhero movies. Heath Ledger as the Joker is brilliant. It is my favorite performance in a movie ever. This capitalizes on the brilliance that was Batman Begins, and adds to it going darker than ever before. There are some problems I have with it as there are with all movies. These include the fight scenes where Batman looks like he's moving to different poses instead of fighting. It looks like he's a robot just moving from point a to point b without any fluent motion. And there are some points in the movie that drone on for a little to long, but for the most part this movie goes from scene to scene …

After Batman flew off the rooftop after witnessing the Joker card in Batman Begins, a sequel was awaited. The hype was higher than Snoop Dogg (*Badum Tss*).
But the wait payed off… Big time.
Back in Gotham, Batman is in full effect. He is an organized person of justice, going on missions nightly, as we see in the first few scenes.
The movie is structured so well. The prologue puts us right into our new villain's work and from there, we get one of the best stories put to screen, with some of the most menacing character relationships and threatening plot points. The Dark Knight exceeded the expectations of a normal Batman film. This had crime, gangsters, an actual city, a hero and a villain.
There was always something around every corner, with so much going for it and it worked.
So …

The Dark Knight
Christopher Nolan and gang are back with their long awaited sequel to their 2005 hit Batman Begins. Begins was a surprise critical darling and extremely well made. It was shocking considering it was the first attempt at Batman in 8 years. Overall the first run at Batman on the big screen turned out to be a failure. No one expected Nolan to follow up his comic book debut with an even better film. It was unheard of for a sequel to better then its predecessor especially one on such a high level. Nolan proved us all wrong.

Turning this into a crime drama was one of the best ideas Nolan could have had. Delve further down the well of realism and bring more into the batman world. It's much easier to get behind a superhero when there is a since of realism to his or her …

A Strong Film, But Pacing Issues Mar It

The Dark Knight is certainly the best Batman film and a step above most films in the super hero genre. It creates a believable and dark environment, grounds its action within specific rules, and features some fantastic dramatic performances. Its downfall, though, is a similar downfall that befell the first film - it's just too long. Heath Ledger creates a fearsome and chaotic performance of iconic movie villainy, and while Batman is pursuing the Joker, the film is exciting and interesting. The problem is - once the Joker is caught, the film still has to spend nearly an hour wrapping up its Two Face narrative - extending the three act structure, and resulting in dragging out all the built up dramatic tension. Because Two Face's origin is rushed and he's in the same film as Ledger's …

With superhero movies, there’s a certain boundary that all are contained in. There have been big strides recently in pushing the boundaries of these films, but they still have that “comic-book” feel to them that distinctly keeps them in their own world. With The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan has blasted open those boundaries with a bazooka, and allows this movie to stand all on its own. This movie may have Batman in it, but you could easily swap these characters out with “real” people and it would have the same effect. The Dark Knight is a truly ground-breaking film, and has set the bar extremely high for all future comic book films.

At the end of Batman Begins we are aware that The Joker is now making a name for himself in Gotham, and that story is continued in this film. …

"The Dark Knight" by Yojimbo

Being a bit of a latecomer when it comes to The Dark Knight, this film was always going to be about the hype. It's a tall order to live up to the expectation generated by the most anticipated film of the year directed by one of my favourite directors containing a performance lauded over by all and sundry. Basically, it had a HELL of a lot to live up to. Astonishingly, it did not disappoint. I loved Batman Begins, particularly its examination of the psychology of Bruce Wayne/Batman and the sequel can be seen as the continuation of a single story in a similar way to the first two Godfather films. This time it's The Joker's show all the way and Ledger tiptoes the line between playfulness and psychosis perfectly. His character is obviously designed to strike a cord with western audiences as …

Thank you Chris Nolan for making a movie that respects the actors involved and for respecting the fans watching it. This movie wasn't a comic book movie, I believe it was a great crime drama. I felt sad after watching it this morning because I saw Heath give one of the most compelling performances of my life time and it sadly was his last, but for us movie fans we get to witness and watch his final curtain and that I thank Chris Nolan for. What a top level movie both in scale and depth, for one instance I sat in that crowded movie theater and smiled knowing that I was watching something special, something that will beg me to go back again and again to take in all the fine performances that his movie has to offer. I loved the interaction and friendship that Gordon has with Batman. Thank …

The Dark Knight review

In most cases people feel that if a superhero flick comes out, it automatically makes it a bad movie. Sometimes there is an exception to this untenable discernment. From the beginning to end, the cinematography (beautiful overhead building camera shots from the beginning), script, plot, method of conveying the story, action and acting have been unblemished. You felt the realism of the story and the impact of the antagonists. Clearly the abilities of Heath Ledger as the Joker have been visually astonishing. His sinister laugh, detailed gestures and timely humor injected has been nothing short of amazing. Christian Bale played it well as Millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne and masked vigilante Batman. The only minor blemish I noticed on the film was some of his grumbling lines. Aaron …
