Christopher Nolan's Third Outting Is Still A Charm

MovieMike - wrote on 01/25/2017

With ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, Director Christopher Nolan delivers his third and (he claims) final chapter of his take on the iconic comic book character, Batman. In doing so, Nolan manages to weave in elements and characters from the previous two installments, ‘Batman Begins’ (2005) and ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008), while completing the story arc of a complex hero who operates outside of the law, but who’s motives are entirely altruistic and just. Having followed trilogy from it’s beginning, I found the results were quite satisfying.

Opening with a scene that contains an airplane high jacking like you’ve never imagined; the story picks up 8 years after the end of ‘The Dark Night’. Following Harvey Dent’s death, Batman has claimed responsibility for Dent’s …

I enjoyed the action part.

Our bat-friend has never really captivated me. I've seen both "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight". I can barely remember anything from the first movie. I guess I wasn't really impressed by that one. "The Dark Knight" on the other hand did, and that because of the charismatic figure "The Joker". A figure without rancor and with a phenomenal crazy look.

That's something I really missed a little bit here. Bane was the personification of intense hatred and had a very menacing look, but the feeling I got was not more then "Oh-ok-again-another-bad-guy".... And then they started with names like Ra's al Ghul. I don't have the faintest idea who that person is.

There was once in the 80's a broadcast a whole day of American Television on Dutch Television, which ended with the movie …

Batman Ends

This film was never going to be as excellent as 'The Dark Knight'. Even the most devout Nolan fan, in their most elated state of creator worship, would have been all too aware of this film's inevitable failure at topping its critical darling of a predecessor. Setting this aside, 'The Dark Knight Rises' still ends up being a film of tremendous quality. Most blockbuster filmmakers state a desire to avoid CGI, but Nolan actually makes good on his word. Its spectacle recalls the motion pictures of the late, great David Lean, and its plotting has a marvelous Dickensian flavour. The script ventures through various implausibilities, but then so did 'The Dark Knight's. Add the muted, creamy visuals of cinematographer Wally Pfister, and you have a sense that the film is made with a distinct …

Flaws or no flaws, it's Batman.

Possible Spoilers, but who cares, we've all seen it.

I remember walking out of the theater, having witnessed The Dark Knight Rises, and thinking to myself: Wow. That was perfect.
It wasn't. I came to understand that. For a time I actually hated this film, but after another watch, it solidified itself as amazing.
When I was expecting The Dark Knight Part II, I got something different.
It's quiet, it's toned down, it's almost a character study.
Admittedly, there are problems. Yes, he mopes around for eight years, yes he got into Gotham in no time after escaping the big well (more on that later). But I am willing to forgive those errors.
Bruce Wayne once again is a person and not the Batman. We are back in Batman Begins, trying to build up a reason for our damaged hero to become a …

The Dark Knight Rises is Good, But Dissapointing

Christopher Nolan is an interesting case of auteur. His Dark Knight Trilogy has become one of the most financially successful trilogies of all time, but at the same time he’s directed far more original pictures like Memento (one of my favorite movies of all time) and Following. He walks the line between serious film maker and blockbuster kingpin, and does so surprisingly well.

I personally love Nolan’s work and was (of course) super excited about The Dark Knight Rises; I wanted to see if he could top the Dark Knight.

The short version is he didn’t top The Dark Knight; he didn’t even top Batman Begins. I’m actually going to go ahead and put my head on the line and say that The Dark Knight Rises is the worst film Christopher Nolan has ever directed. I know that …

"The Dark Knight Rises" by Yojimbo

Eight years after the death of Harvey Dent, a reclusive Bruce Wayne brings Batman out of retirement to combat a ruthless mercenary with an army of fanatical followers who hold the entire city of Gotham for ransom. I feel I have to begin this review by pointing out that The Dark Knight Rises is a beautifully crafted superhero blockbuster, because otherwise it's going to sound extremely negative! The problem for me is that this film is somewhat lacking in the "X Factor" that made the first two instalments seem so very special. Let's face it, Tom Hardy had an act that's basically impossible to follow but when the script touched on the moral ambiguity of the character of Bruce Wayne (that he's essentially a billionaire who goes around beating up poor people to maintain the establishment's …

The Dark Knight Rises somewhat

Epic, ambitious, and dark. Bloated, over-long, and messy. The Dark Knight Rises still succeeds on it's own terms by being a daring summer action flick. Coming from Christopher Nolan, however, the film is sophisticated and deeper than other comic-to-screen adaptations. Have no doubts, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman knocks the role out of the park. Not only does she absolutely kick ass, but she's also the shining beacon in the center of all the chaos, bringing much needed energy and levity in stark contrast to the films bleak nature. Tom Hardy (or my husband) once again completely inhabits his character, he's ruthless, brutal, calculating, and darkly humorous. Even if he doesn't match up to Ledger's immortal role as the Joker (and really who can?) he still gets the job done …

The Dark Knight Rises

This was a great good-bye to the Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale trilogy. The mood was so much darker than The Dark Knight. I actually cringed quite a bit with Bane's actions. I can not compare which was better, Ledger's Joker or Hardy's Bane because both were equally menacing.
Bale's Bruce Wayne is introduced as a recluse eight years after Batman was labled a villian of Gotham City. Batman is no longer needed because the crime in the city has never been lower, making the policemen more of a decoration than a profession. Things change when Bane makes his appearance and all hell breaks loose, making Batman's return essential. Complicating Batman's agenda is Silena Kyle with her cat and mouse games with both Wayne and Batman. She plays a cat burglar with nothing to loose because of …

Just got back from a drive-in double bill Dark Knight Rises with Ted. I had read all the reviews for TDKR the morning after the midnight screening just to see what people in general were saying and i was actually shocked on alot didnt seem to like the final instalment of Nolan's Batman trilogy however this didn't detour me from seeing it. Alot of folks out there said it wasn't The Dark Knight didn't think it was supposed to be it's the 3rd installment with a whole new evil villain (Bane played brilliantly by Tom Hardy) What director Chris Nolan gives us is a damn good follow up to it. TDKR starts a little slow but that's not long as it garners speed as it goes. Clocking in at a little over 3hrs it doesnt seem like that as it flies with intensity (like most of nolan's films do) Without …

Gotham City is once again in trouble as Bane arrived knocking down all the people in town and spreads terror releasing prisoners to magnify violence.

Finally it came.

The Dark Knight topped my list of action movies. The Dark Knight Rises would probably land not far from it. Honestly, my expectations weren't met by this latest Batman movie, but I wouldn't say it wasn't good. It is good, just that I appreciate more Joker's story than Bane's. The cast intensifies as Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt came into action with Christian Bale. Lastly, my problem with Nolan's directorship is still there. Just like on Inception, there are several scenes bore me and I find irrelevant.

Too long and exhausting. Nolan should learn to present a great story line and great performances …
