"Hereafter" by Yojimbo

Yojimbo - wrote on 10/09/2012

A San Franciscan psychic whose uncontrollable ability to commune with the dead has caused him to lead a life in isolation, a London schoolboy who lost his twin brother and a French reporter who suffered a near death experience converge in a chance encounter that changes all of their lives. Hereafter begins with a stunning sequence set during a tsunami that would put Roland Emmerich to shame and sets the scene beautifully for an "adult" exploration into the belief of an afterlife. However what we actually get is a rather long winded daytime soap opera during which very little at all actually happens. Matt Damon does put in quite a sensitive performance and his scenes with Bryce Dallas Howard are perfectly judged but they lead nowhere. Instead we are left with what look like leftover …

Adds Nothing to the Conversation

Sadly this film adds nothing to the conversation. Matt Damon plays his part well and was the only character I had any feelings about at all. Despite the perceived risk of crossing continents, to focus purely on Caucasian Christian milieu negated that risk. It dragged along without narrative drive or plot tension, and the absolutely horrible and glaring clunks, such as the Dicken's tourist guide speaking of Edward Drood rather than Edwin Drood slowed even further the barely moving pace. There were no recognisable human traits to resonate with. The girl from the cooking class, apart from being really annoying did not offer a character we could sympathise with. To feel for the boy you had to work really hard in between getting irritated at a funeral in which the ashes miraculously …

Hereafter review

French television journalist Marie Lelay (Cécile de France) survives a near death experience. Psychic George Lonegan (Matt Damon) reads for his brother's client. Billy (Jay Mohr) insists that he utilize his gift. George wants to quit because the process is painful for him, though throughout the film one wonders if his reason was valid. Marcus and Jason (Frankie and George McLaren) do their best to prevent their mother from being picked up by social services. Highlights of the film was the impressive realistic tsunami, conversations of Goerge and the twins and the way the characters become intertwined. Mostly the picture drags and plot was all over. Score was almost nonexistent and the screenplay could have been improved. Parts of the film were good, but as a whole, Hereafter is a …

Not One Of Clint's Best

MovieMike - wrote on 12/22/2011

Clint Eastwood’s notable directorial offerings include films such as ‘Unforgiven’ (1992), ‘Bridges Of Madison County’ (1995), ‘Million Dollar Baby’ (2004), and more recently ‘Gran Torino’ (2008). I always had been a big fan of his as both an actor and director. Many films find him filling both of these roles (like all the ones mentioned). Even when doing double duty on both sides of the camera, Clint always seems to deliver. With a track record like that, I had very high hopes for ‘Hereafter’. Unfortunately, after taking this one in, I don’t think it will be looked back on as one of his better efforts. While I have a hard time panning his work here, I’m having an equally difficult time in identifying the specifics that make this project appear to fall …
