Johnny Depp navigates the dangerous world of cocaine trafficking as real-life drug dealer George Jung. It’s not badly acted but it’s not quite as suspenseful as it wants to be. Oddly the most interesting subplot is Jung’s recurring efforts to please his disapproving parents (Ray Liotta, Rachel Griffiths).

This is in my Top 25 favorites. So I might be very biased when I say that this movie is highly underrated. This movie is a more realistic and MUCH MUCH MUCH better Scarface. Characters, that are developed and entertaining, carry us through this amazing true story that has you gripping to your seat. Throughout the movie I found myself fully engaged with Depp's, George Jung. Cruz punches just as hard of hit as Depp with her character. The violence, the comical relief, the drug business, and every character you run into is well thought out at fits perfectly into place with the rest of the story. A Top-100 greatest movie contender in my opinion. High Re-watchability

Quick, flashy, stylish true-crime drama that takes a page from Scorcese's book. Think 'Goodfellas', minus most of the murder and F-bombs, and add lots more drugs. It's an entertaining watch for those reasons. The drama doesn't hold much weight, due to the thin characters. Good acting and competent directing lift the material.

A true story of George Jung, the person responsible for bringing in drugs to Hollywood. This had a good cast and stunning cinematography. Its musical background was timely based on the period. Penelope Cruz did a splendid job and so did the supporting cast. It had an effective script, even a Jaws reference "we're gonna need a bigger boat." A very interesting story but very depressing in the end. Depp displayed his acting ability on this film. Not sure why this was not recognized or marketed properly, all in all it was an entertaining film.

Everyone I know loves this movie, and how could they not? No need to state the obvious of Johnny Depp's flawless performance that he delivers in every film he's cast. The soundtrack, the supporting actors, the overall dream-like sense of wonder that still warms your heart, is enough to send your senses into a frenzy and have you in awe that this man actually existed. This is the true story of the backbone of movies like Scarface, that actually seem petty in comparison. And I'd be a fool not to mention Ray Liotta's grace in his role as the lead's father.

Follows a similar downward spiraling path as Goodfellas, but is a less charismatic story. At times that hurts the film, but Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz's performances mostly captivate.

Depp is so good in this very depressing and disturbing story about the cocaine trade. Although there's nothing uplifting about this story, Depp still manages to make Jung into a sympathetic character -- not an easy task.

I wasn't expecting too much when I saw this, but my expectations were met and exceeded. A nice story, good casting and excellent use of music - a very well-rounded film.
