Led by an excellent early performance by Ryan Gosling, "The Believer" is a compelling but also very unfocused portrait of self-hatred and self-deception

Neo-Nazi Ryan Gosling is actually a Jew in this impressive drama. Gosling is superb as is the screenplay but there are weaknesses, particularly in the lumpy narrative. That said, there are enough memorable moments to make this a must.
