This horror/swashbuckler inspired by the Robert E. Howard novels actually starts out promising. It's rare when the prologue is the most interesting part of the film. The action has this great style, it's quite violent, and the movie finds an ideal atmosphere between Gothic and goofy. But that is quickly dashed for a routine redemption plot involving Puritans, witchcraft, and dodgy CGI monsters. James Purefoy shows the chops for an action lead very similar to Hugh Jackman but there's a long wait between the opening action scene and the next time he picks up a sword.

A violent mercenary fighting Spaniards in Africa for Queen Elizabeth I finds out his soul is bound for hell and barely escapes his sentence. Vowing a life of peace, Solomon Kane sticks to his path of redemption... that is until a brutal slaying of a family and the kidnapping of a young woman before his eyes has him back on the path of vengeance against the powerful sorcerer, Malachi. This movie is okay I mean it is not as bad as people say it is.

If you like action with a medieval twist (and some fantasy elements) - Solomon Kane is an excellent choice. There is plenty of sword action (and lots of decapitation) to go around and a fairly interesting story (though I found it a tad predictable myself) but James Purefoy does a good job as the titular character looking for redemption for his sins who turns to peace... only to have to resort back to violence to save his legacy. Overall, while not a knockout, it is enjoyable.
