At the beginning of production for Batman Returns, Tim Burton originally didn’t want to return (heh!) to direct the film. He had mixed feelings about the first film, and he wanted the sequel be something more than what he felt Warner Bros. would allow. Luckily, the studio gave him much more creative control, and he agreed to comeback and helm the second film in the Batman franchise. You can tell from the get-go that he has much more power this time around, because the film has a much darker atmosphere and some of the characters have very dark backgrounds. This is a double-edged sword, as some of this new control results in improvements over the first, while others hamper the overall product.

As we return to Gotham we watch a scene of an infant being thrown into a river by his …

"Batman Returns" by Yojimbo

A corporate shark teams up with a mutant sewer dweller to try and take over Gotham City not counting on interference from both Batman and a vengeful employee reborn as the patent leather clad Catwoman. Tim Burton's sequel to his "nice try but no cigar" re-invention of Batman is a big improvement in every department. The production design is fantastic, it has some spectacular, slam bang set-pieces (particularly the explosive finale) and is tinged throughout with his macabre sense of humour. It does have its faults; the dialogue is a little forced, its pitch is a little inconsistent and I never thought that Keaton was the right man for the job. Inevitably the film is stolen out from under him by the trio of villains; Walken has a lot of fun as the malevolent Nosferatu-monickered tycoon, …

In anticipation of re-watching Batman Returns for the umpteenth time, I popped in the bonus material disc and peered into the making-of featurettes. There are quite a few tasty tidbits worth sharing (which I'll get to later).

I'd first like to point out that given the richness and scope of the film, I'll only be pointing out some of its highlights.

Tim Burton was reluctant to make a second Batman film; not only for the obvious reasons but also due to how he proclaimed (rightfully so) that the first had several boring patches. The studio captured his interest by suggesting he make a "Tim Burton film" instead of just another sequel. He decided to go to extremes, not feeling beholden to the comics. This resulted in a visually stunning, thematically dark yet hilarious picture that is …

Batman Returns

It is my opinion that the first Batman of the Batman series was only half the movie that Batman Returns is. In the first Batman by Tim Burton we had only Batman and The Joker both played wonderfully by Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

In Batman Returns we have what I feel is the most perfectly cast Batman movie (yes even better then Dark Knight). Keaton returns as Batman and is perfect in the role never going to far overtop with the character of Batman, which is perfect in this film when it comes to the two villains that he’s up against. First you have Danny DeVito who is delightfully insane as the Penguin. Then you have Michelle Pfeiffer as Cat-Woman, who I dare to say is one of the most interesting and complex villains in the Batman movies. I feel this …
