"Austin Powers" by Yojimbo

International super-spy, fashion photographer and style guru of the swinging sixties Austin Powers volunteers to be cryogenically frozen and wakes in politically correct 1997 to thwart the plans of his nemesis, Dr. Evil.

This Mike Myers vehicle is a scattershot spoof of the spy films of the 1960's and pastiche of the early James Bond films. Like many comedies of this type, the jokes are rather hit and miss; some are a little laboured, many rather juvenile, but plenty also genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. Myers is obviously enjoying himself and his infectious sense of the absurd permeates the film but it is Dr. Evil who is the show-stealer; he is one of the great comic creations of recent years and the film is consistently funny whenever he is in the screen.

The first Austin Powers flick is still funny today, despite several catchphrases ("Do I make you horny, baby?", "Oh, behave!", etc.) having long since worn out their welcome and an unimaginative second sequel (Goldmember). There are two primary reasons why this movie is comic gold:

1. It's the best James Bond spoof you'll ever see. (You can take my word for it: I'm a HUGE 007 fan.)

2. The dialogue crackles with wit and is delivered flawlessly by the cast.

For reference, check out the scene where Dr. Evil struggles to come up with a contemporary scheme that *hasn't* already happened: "Oh, hell. Let's just do what we always do: hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world hostage."

Or how about when Austin tries to live dangerously by staying at five while playing Blackjack …
