Mel Gibson succeeds here, where he has been hit or miss with his historical pieces. Braveheart was his peak, followed by the disappointed, Patriot, then the confusing POTC, and back again to redeem himself with this pretty interesting film set in pre-colonial South America.

This is great move. So savage, so brutal and that is exactly what it needs to be. And who can do it better than that crazy Mel Gibson. I would love to see more historical films from him.

Mel Gibson, of course, did a fantastic job directing this movie. I was surprised at how accurate the history was in this movie, it was exciting for me.It's hard to find a great movie with accurate historical facts in it.The Actors were incredible, especially Rudy Youngblood and Dalia Hernandez.

Say what you will about Mel Gibson, but the man knows how to craft a strong thriller. The pacing in this film is adrenaline-fueled and there are some amazing set pieces and special effects.

A nerve shredding chase movie form Mel Gibson which is visceral, bloody and so over the top, it's hard to dislike. The downfall of Mayan civilization is examined leaving nothing to the imagination, jungle savagery, human sacrifice and unrelenting sadism abound but taken at face value, Apocalypto is a cracking action adventure movie. A story about an ancient history and culture and a world that is long forgotten is significantly free of sermons and messages and delivers a frenzied, visually stunning portrayal of one mans battle for survival in a cruel and savage world.

I don't understand why everyone loved this movie so much. Truly, this film only left a bad taste in my mouth. Most of the "interesting" moments of the film were there purely for shock, such as the man being told to eat the pig testicles or the woman having a baby while drowning. There were portions of the film that were great to watch, such as the parts that were based on historical facts, but as a whole, the film lost me.

Exciting, well-paced adventure takes the audience to a time and place we rarely ever see; Mel Gibson's penchance for violence and gore is evident, but the characters are compelling and the imagery, however grotesque, is unflinching. Final Grade: B+
