This film is essentially an homage, of an homage, of an homage. It's a stale copy of a few specific stylistic agendas all mashed together with little to no substance. Genres represented are: classic Japanese samurai, spaghetti westerns (inspired by the former), and the films of Tarantino (inspired by both formers). The main problem here is that writer/director Miike is not a good copycat. His way of constructing stories and use of dialogue do not fit any of these styles, causing a mess. The addition of Tarantino himself just makes that fact more obvious. The lack of interesting characters or dialogue, and slow pace, makes for an often boring watch.

Some weak points, mainly in regard to story execution (then followed by Tarantino's pathetic attempt at "acting" - blargh...) But that doesn't mean it's not worth seeing! Some beautiful shots, and massive attention to detail in wardrobe & setting make this a movie to check out! (Mainly for those who absorb films to learn or be inspired by them.)
