"Slumdog Millionaire" by Yojimbo

"Slumdog" Jamal who grew up on the streets of Bombay is at the brink of winning the grand prize of India's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire when is is "questioned" by the police suspecting fraud. Danny Boyle's latest and highly acclaimed project has a lot of the energy that marked his debut. The clever structure of the film uses his explanations on how he knew the answers to fill in the background of what life is like for the most impoverished members of Indian society, brutalized in religious riots, either ignored or harassed by the authorities and exploited by criminals. In this way it's like a more light-hearted and less violent version of City Of God and has a modicum of the power and grittiness of that film. Some of the more disturbing aspects of what these kids go through …

Slumdog Millionaire review

A foreign film based on the manipulation of a game show and the love of 2 individuals. Obviously, the cinematography of the film really brought out the “slum” areas of India. It likewise showed how BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies have been booming in the said country. The movie focuses on the life Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a former street child who was given the opportunity to play for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Jamal and Latika (Freida Pinto) became close, but eventually they lost touch after a gangster/train related incident. The character build-up was respectable, music of course was suitable and the dialogue/script was efficient. This could have been an instant classic for me if the realism was present and that the coincidence of the answers were not …

I Knew You'd Be Watching

This may be my favorite movie of all time. And I know what you're thinking, "He's into over-hyped, indy crap whose favorite band is the Jonas Brothers." You would only be partly right. I will give anything a chance, over-hyped or not. And no, the Jonas Brothers suck. So, on with the review:
Danny Boyle, though not filled with movies I particularly LOVE, has a portfolio both impressive and varied. Horror films, off-the-wall comedies about drugs and all that, well, was he the best man for the job? After seeing this incredible film: YES!
Dev Patel and Freida Pinto are young and in love in this movie and I believed it. I believed everything in this movie as it portrayed one of the hardest lives that a young man could live while at the exact same time asking me seriously …

It's in the human nature, and reflected often in arts, that desire (weird? bizzarre?) of showing off the lower emotions and morals and wishes, and also the higher.
You can find yourself in momments of your life like feeling more appeal to either vast world (the white one, and the dark one)
Dany Boyle grew. And grew well. Slumdog M. is the result of an understanding of his owns nightmares and fears. Also he understands, he found in himself the exact dosis of style and direction of actors and events.
The movie is fantastic and finally a winner, a worthy winner of prizes and stuff. The script (i bet of lower quality than the novel, and yet worthy) is fantastic, and then, in such a simple story, you find yourself reflected, scared, sadded, moved by the images and the words.
This film is …

Aladdin & Jasmine: Unanimated

This movie has it all, a love story, action-drama, incredible acting and one of the least of my favorites, subtitles. However, like 'Life is Beautiful' there is no need to read, for you understand what is happening by the emotion of the film. This film takes you on the life of the lead actor and through all his hardships that come his way. But we find out that what he has learned through these exact hardships are all the answers to the game shows questions. No one can figure out how this 'slumdog' is able to get so far without having any kind of education. Not only do the authorities end up kidnapping him after the end of the day during a taping of the show, for they, like everyone, thinks he is cheating, but we find out the gameshow host himself was a 'slumdog' and does not wish …

SLUMDOGS SLAM !!!

Even slumdogs have dreams. Quite a breakaway from film producer CHRISTIAN COLSON's knack for horror/thriller movies. This production raked 8 OSCAR awards which catapulted AR RAHMAN into the mainstream OSCAR spotlight. Akin to the storyline itself, the setting, the cultural backdrop, and even the characters were "foreign" but made their way to the top. No need for subtitles. You can't help but notice the Indian accent in the dialogues, I mean the majority of it. The indigenous context was kept.

What a string of events. Or, should I say, "how the events were so stringed!". Jamal's life . Each milepost connected to every question that led him to 20 million rupees. But would you say that:

A) Jamal joined the TV contest just to find Latika?
B) Jamal really thinks that 20 …

Slumdog Definetly Enlightens The Oscar Season.

If your all tied up as to who will be bringing home the Oscar for best picture, it's as simple as this. Look no further than Slumdog Millionare.

In Slumdog Millionare, a grown up and wise Jamal Malik is questions away from winning 20 million rupees on an indian version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionare.' All of the questions he has been provided with somehow correlate with past experiences in his life as an orphan in the slums of India.

Slumdog Millionare is a powerful, engaging film that will entertain and charm throughout, and till I've seen more of the Academy's picks, Slumdog Millionare (besides The Dark Knight) is the best film of the year. Slumdog Millionare is an inspirational vision that examines and celebrates life, keeping you on your feet viewing this modern masterpiece …

It Is Written, So It Shall Be

A lot of the times when a film garners awards and praise it is either A) A critical darling, good enough for the film snobs, but too artsy for the average person, B) A spectacle of such epic proportions you cannot escape its grasp (ala Titanic, Return of the King) C) A star-studded ensemble that makes Hollywood drool.

Slumdog Millionaire is none of these, thought those who haven’t seen it might think it qualifies as the A answer. Despite a limited release, Slumdog manages to be a great success without special effects, without big-name stars, without a huge budget. What it has is a compelling story, a lot of heart and a spectacular setting.

First off, whoever is the casting director should be given their own award. Managing to find three different actors, for three different …

Slum: Anything But A Dog

timtom - wrote on 01/19/2009

The words 'masterful', 'powerful' and 'mind-blowing' understate this extraordinary movie. Starting in no particular order - Concept: taking a tacky popular TV quiz show - "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" - and using the India version as the vehicle in which to tell the story via flashback was ingenious and 'masterful' in the way it was pulled off. The story played second to the way it was depicted. Riveting scenes of poverty, brutality and anarchy in India will stay with the viewer long after viewed. In one scene the main character, Jamal, as a child, shows his unimaginable determination by choosing to literally immerse his entire body in human defecation in order to escape from an outhouse solely because he had a short window in which to obtain a local celebrity's autograph. …

I guess there's a first time for everything because I would be the first one to think this movie is not that great at all. Yes it's very well directed and yes the screenplay is awesome but the story is just so predictable for me. I really wanted to like it as much as everybody did but I just can't like something that's so unreal. Unreal in the sense that I can't think of a possibility that everything that happened was so supposed to happen like destiny or something. For me it's just like watching TV wrestling. The actors I mean wrestlers are beaten down to ground but then someway somehow they ended up winning the match. Maybe because it's scripted. That's why I knew in some sense the hero is going to win because he's the good guy. And that maybe the case here in Slumdog Millionaire, the …
