"Lakeview Terrace" by Yojimbo

A young married couple move into their new home and make an enemy of the overbearing and overprotective cop who lives next door. Lakeview Terrace is very much a mainstream Hollywood thriller that pretty much exists solely for Sam Jackson fans to get their jollies watching him act like an asshole. Its very familiar formula of neighbour-from-hell also skirts around race issues as the couple in question are mixed race (I can only assume things are a bit different socially in America as this wouldn't raise an eyebrow in Britain in this day and age) but the fact that it all revolves around feeling sorry for the trials of a middle class white man feels a little too "Michael Douglas" to extract any real sympathy from me. Technically, it's a solidly made film with decent performances but it's …

Can we be focused for once? Can we avoid so many multiple subjects that go in so many different directions that the core explodes by the end of a movie? 'Lakeview Terrace' follows a disturbing pattern of recent movies that include probably a dozen topics into two hours and then asks the viewer to sort them and then forget most of them by the closing. My bad for not taking notes, but let's see if we can name a few: racism, interracial couples, new neighbor, bad cop(s), bad neighbors, lying, single parenthood, unwanted pregnancies, disapproving parents – which leads back to racism, affairs, revenge, adults acting like children, children being rebellious, and on and on. I love Samuel L. Jackson. He is one of the best. And this isn't a first time he's played a racist. To my recognition, my …

One of Neil LaBute's Weakest

I expected to be greatly entertained coming into this film because I’ve been a fan of Neil LaBute since I watched the masterfully manipulative “The Shape of Things” (I thought it was a bit better than “In the Company of Men” but both are just as mean). I was surprised that this movie didn’t have LaBute’s signature direction and style of storytelling. In fact, I thought it was another typical quasi-thriller from a first time director with a very blatant symbolism that hammers the audiences again and again. Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Wilson, and Kerry Washingtom did a good job playing their respective roles and I don’t blame them for the weak script and mediocre direction. Samuel L. Jackson stars in the 2008 thriller Lakeview Terrace. Able Turner is an aggresive cop with harsh disciplines who lives in Lakeview Terrace, a little suburban neighborhood. When Chris Mattson and his wife, a white man, and an african-american women, Able forces unpleasant experiences on the new couple in order to send them out of his neighborhood. Chris can't call the authorities for help, seeing as the law lives beside him, and the rest of the LAPD wouldn't believe him. Therefore, Chris and his wife Lisa must return the trouble back to the wicked polic officer.
This movie was lots of fun. Sure fun to watch, but earning the term fun shouldn't be taken seriously as to calling it incredible. This movie was not incredible, Devilishly smart, it was just a fun thriller to watch. At …
