I guess I'd call this a coming-of-age psychodrama. Pretty much the whole movie had a dark feel to it with dim lighting, overcast days, and rain. There were a few happy moments for our hero and a lot of unhappy ones. The only surprises I had here were provided by the twisty turnabout relationship of our hero and his mom-look-alike lover. Actually, they were more like dull surprises, but were a welcome change-up from the seemingly relentless unpleasantness I was determined to watch. This would probably have been an eye-opener in the sixties or early seventies.

Jamie Bell plays a very disturbed yet tragic character - a person devastated by the death of his mother who develops an unhealthy habit of spying on people. He also develops an unhealthy habit of obsession - with his step mother and, upon leaving home, a hotel worker who bears a striking resemblance to his mother. Oedipus would be proud.
