Led by two brilliant performances, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is a shattering psychological thriller, centered around the intriguing relationship between two aging sisters. Grey Gardens this is not, however, as Bette Davis turns in a commanding and terrifying performance as the overpowering Baby Jane Hudson and Joan Crawford is appropriately weak and pathetic as her sister, Blanche. The film hints at Sunset Boulevard-like themes of aging starlets, but takes a dark turn into Hitchcockian noir territory, resulting in a more harrowing film. The film's scares are subtle, but work within the context of the plot, as the engrossing performances make the film's script work.

Bette Davis invents crazy. It helps to know the history behind this movie to appreciate how offbeat it was.

When this movie used to come on TV (yes, back in the old days when you had to wait for them), I had a morbid fascination with it, and watched it intently each time. I knew the two stars had been big in previous decades and I wondered what brought them to the point of taking these grotesque roles. Now, after seeing many other Bette Davis and Joan Crawford movies, I appreciate the high Kitsch factor, and I can just imagine the behind-the-scenes banter and trash talk between Bette and Joan. Bette does have the juiciest role, by far. Another treat is the great character actor Victor Buono.

Classic campy thriller with Bette Davis at her most garish, and quite unnerving, playing off Joan Crawford. Over-the-top, yet completely watchable and entertaining.

Overall, an extremely silly movie. But I like Bette Davis a whole bunch so I checked it out. Campy-to-the-max.
