It may not appeal to many beyond circles of film historians and connoisseurs, but for those niche loving sophisticates, Carl Theodore Dreyer's "Vampyre" is a real work if art. One that I found more eerie and mesmerizing than both "Nosferatu" and "Dracula."

Just okay, for the most part. I didn't find anything creepy about it. I would barely consider this horror. It has this monotone nature about it that could more easily put one to rest than evoke fear. There's a few interesting visual tricks. My favorite involves the shadow of a man moving freely and then becoming in sync with his movements, all done in one live take.

Using a combination of creative film trickery and some atmospheric production design, Dreyer crafts a horror film that, despite its obvious age, is still unsettling and scary. The harsh black and white photography, the angular set design, and some creepy acting performances (how weird and dark is that dream sequence?) give this film a punch.
