A young father is stalked by a pair of strangers who kidnap his son and inject him with a mysterious device causing him to undergo frightening changes. Having just re-watched this film, I'd have to say it has dated a little; the cinematography in particular can hardly be described as subtle and the action is rather clumsy. The imagery however, is just as powerful with some great Geiger-esque production design and striking visuals and animation. The pay-off at the end is certainly worth the effort, and it will appeal to fans of David Lynch and David Cronenberg. But I didn't remember it being quite so GAY!

Advancing on the foundations of the original, Tsukamoto's sequel is slightly more structured yet no less visceral. While the prime directive is a motif of family and revenge, it integrates the metal fetishism and cybernetic mutations of the previous Tetsuo with an alluring new sheen. Hybrid industrialoids clash in the crumbling underdark of a dystopian Tokyo, under the whirling gaze of his as-usual intense camera-work. The popularity of 'Gunhed' and 'Robocop' may have prompted a more secular design, but it is fashioned with such prototypical grotesqueness and ferocity that its contribution to early 90's cyberpunk is equally novel.
