In this stylish remake of the influential British television serial, Professor Quatermass is reluctantly reassigned from his job as director of a space mission to oversea the evacuation of early hominid fossils found in a London construction site. What at first appears to be an unexploded bomb from the Second World War turns out to be an ancient extraterrestrial device that may destroy the world by inciting humanity to violence. Inspired by then cutting-edge archeology and H.P. Lovecraft -- and in turn a primary inspiration for both Indiana Jones and Alien -- this handsome Hammer Films production surprisingly intelligent and truly creepy.
Quatermass is the name of a scientist, a caracter in a series of sci-fi movies, and "Quatermass and the Pit" is a story about ancient invaders. Invaders that came from mars and are discovered accidentaly in the present days when digging for a railway station. Insect like creatures, with telekinetic powers for a grave danger. -- travincal
