Night of the Demon

A creaking B-movie which is greater than the sum of its scenes.
Dana Andrews was the American interest for that important market. His best work probably behind him at this stage of his career (this isn't a big budget movie).
Niall MacGinnis is too good for the movie but gives it his all.
Peggy Cummins has more of a role than just too look good.
The whole, should we should we not see the monster seems to dominate a lot of discussion among fans.
Personally I am glad we get too see it, especially the scenes where it looks like it is pedalling on an invisible unicycle.
More to the point, the film could have done without the obviously stuffed big cat that "attacks" Andrews.
The location shots are wonderfully atmospheric, it is a lost Britain we are looking at. The …

I was looking forward to this one as I'd read a lot of great things about it, but unfortunately these high hopes were thoroughly crushed. Dana Andrews plays a scientist out to debunk "witchcraft" when he encounters a sinister cult headed by Niall MacGinnis (not one, but BOTH being introduced by the old "newspaper headline" exposition trick). Cue Peggy Cummins as the typically sexist B-movie love interest and what follows is a load of absurdly pointed dialogue, even punctuated at various intervals by a thunderclap sound effect. Andrews does little but go round repeating the same Scullyisms to eccentric scientists spouting the usual "scientists have become too arrogant! We must open our minds to mumbo jumbo!" platitudes so favoured by fundamental christians. True, Tourneur does have a nice …
