Abandoning some of his later signature surreal visuals, Fellini tells a charming and touching story the resonates because of beautiful performances and some well-written dialogue. One of the director's best.

Several of Fellini's greatest movies featured his wife Giulietta Masina. None relied on her quite as much as this one, and it suited her perfectly. It's Fellini's best, I think, and it's Masina's best role.
