The symbolic social message about the cruelty of humanity is very blunt here and skillfully communicated through some not-so-subtle symbolism. It's a well-made and poignant film, but a very unsettling one, also.

Extremely surreal feel at first, then absorbed into their world of rebellion, devolves into anarchy/chaos/insanity. Intense feeling of suspsense/tension, very dark. And great chicken motif, so you know it's Herzog.
