A slow-burn thriller that utilizes layered performances and unique camera angles to visually portray a paranoid state. It reminded me of early Polanski thrillers (which he started making shortly after this film). I can see obvious influence there. The concept is very intriguing, but the plot is lacking in some areas. I liked the slow unfolding of facts and the couple of turns in the latter half, especially the ending. Some revelations just weren't made all too clear near that point and it left me a bit unsatisfied. I also never got a sense of what was it about his home life that he disliked so much besides his longing for a previously planned future. I recommend it based on atmosphere, directing, and concept alone.

John Frankenheimer's stunning mix of sci-fi and thriller was never likely to attain the audience it deserved. Downbeat from the off, it tells of an elderly business man disillusioned that the American dream doesn't add up to a hill of beans. Rather than going quietly to the grave he instead enters into a Faustian pact with a mysterious organisation that promises a second chance - in this case coming back as a young man (Rock Hudson) . But the existential angst soon piles up as he tries to come to terms with the 'transfer'. Ace cameraman James Wong Howe superbly captures the air of menace, while Hudson is surprisingly convincing as the man who isn't quite what he seems

A very odd movie. It's interesting to watch, but unfortunately the story has no meat.
