This is the type of film you have to pause often to ruminate on the deep layers of symbolism put forth through the dreamlike storytelling. Bergman plays with themes of memory, happiness, and dignity as he traces the life of an aging professor and does it with his characteristic surrealistic touch. Beautiful and thoughtful.

Oh, poor black and white films. Poor subtitled black and white films. They just lose me. Still, this film frames the big questions of life for reflection, and that is commendable.

My first Bergman. A movie that cought, captivated me and made love Bergman's aesthetic forever. You have thrilling close shots, dreaming sequences, great lines, and as usual, the eternal issues that Bergman managed. Great acting by Victor, and a very thought provocking script.
