Wasn't too familiar with Joy Division, but I saw that Samantha Morton was in this film. The guy who played Ian Curtis wasn't all that impressive. When Samantha Morton was acting her heart out and he kind of just whimpered along, I can't say I was too impressed. Now I am more familiar with Joy Division and who they were thanks to this film. The girl who played their kid was cute. |

Control is a look at the life of Ian Curtis through a series of gorgeous photographs. The photographs just happen to be moving. It seems that at any moment of Control, you could take a still image of it, and it would make a great photograph at any moment.
Now there is a major problem with Control. We never really have a emotional connection with Ian Curtis or any of the characters, and, as you could expect, this is probably because the movie is so focused on its visuals. But, in away, it’s kind of a relief to have a movie in this genre to go in a different direction.
But how or weather or not you feel anything about the characters, it won’t stop you from being taken away by the visuals.

A great bio-pic and of course a must see for any Joy Division fan. While most music bios are large and bombastic, that wouldn't fit well with someone like Ian Curtis. Control is fittingly reserved, muted, and bleak, but no less of a celebration. |
