The original teen movie, "Rebel Without a Cause" doesn't sugarcoat troubled youth.

The original "teen" drama starring the iconic rebel James Dean. His performance and persona is perfect for this role and it's almost impossible to comprehend its impact at the time, the "teen" being such a ubiquitously acknowledged demographic these days. Nicely (and unusually) neither judgemental nor sensationalist, it still strikes a chord to this day.

This was one of the films that started me on my journey, my love affair with all things film, and so for me, it is a great film, with great performances by Dean, Wood, and Mineo. Also Nicholas Ray's direction was spot on.

There's minor problems with the story and it does get over-dramatic in scenes. But I can't help liking this film completely for it's subdued moments and harsh teen delinquency. James Dean's performance makes it worthwhile.

Once again, James Dean shines in this film about rebellious teens in the 50's. The film manages to strike the right chord of teenage angst without coming off as whiny or overly melodramatic. Not only does Dean ooze cool, but Sal Mineo deserves special mention for his heartfelt supporting performance.

This movie has entered the pantheon of great films not just because it still seems new and innovative, not just because it has a half-dozen fantastic quotes, not just because it presents parent/adolescent relationships in such a realistic way, but because it makes you remember exactly what it was like to be a teen, searching for a clan, searching for a cause.

Rebellion doesn't get much better than this. James Dean, the forever iconic teenage rebel, is in top form in his all-too-brief career. It still resonates even if parts of it seem contrite to today's audience.

The myth, and legend of James Dean is clearly evident in this picture. James Dean is the 50's icon for teenagers (along with McQueen and Elvis). This movie is like the outsiders (but better) and does have some really good scenes. Dated.
