One of the all-time great anime features, Hayao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke" is a marvelous epic with complex characters, ambitious scope, and poignant pro-environmental\anti-violence messages.

If an animated film can trick you for even a second that you're watching an animated film, then the movie has done it's job.

Miyazaki's medieval epic is rather more down to earth than much of his other work, featuring the quest of a young prince to find the spirit of the forest to lift a demon's curse that threatens his life. I'm not entirely sure who this film is aimed at; it's too ponderous and lacking in humour for children and a little simplistic in content for adults. The eco message is a little clumsy (essentially humans=bad and nature=good) and whiffs faintly of New Age BS. But it is attractively drawn and scored and is considerably less schmaltzy and contrived than many of it's American counterparts.

This is a prime example of why Miyazaki films are some of the best animation has to offer. "Princess Mononoke" is strikingly beautiful, with several memorable cinematic images. At the same time, the film probes thoughtful philosophical and thematic territory without bogging down the plot and action.

Another masterpiece by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, this film tells the story of the primal clash between nature and humanity. Nearly every scene of this film was painfully drawn by hand (it is rumored to be the most expensive animated film ever to make), giving the animation a fresh and clean feel. Although it will be lost on some, the film portrays many intricacies of late feudal Japanese life. Hardcore anime fans will insist on the subtitled version of the film, but thanks to a star-studded English cast, the dubbed version captures the feel of the original almost flawlessly. Winner of dozens of awards, this film deserves its spot in animation history.

Another amazing Studio Ghibli release. The animation is amazing and the story is very deep - there is no real good and evil in this film, just different shades of gray. All in all highly enjoyable and recommended.
